What is the Y2Y Global Youth Conference 2008?

The conference is part of the United Nations Week celebrations. Every year, UNA-NCA (United Nations Association of the National Capital Area) commemorates the day the Charter of the United Nations went into effect (October 24th, 1945) by organizing a week of conferences and events with several partners in the capitol area. Y2Y is proud to collaborate with UNA-NCA and host the Global Youth Conference as part of these events.

The Global Youth Conference is presented by the Youth-to-Youth Community (Y2Y) of the World Bank. Y2Y is a community of young staff within the World Bank. Y2Y's mission is to mainstream youth issues within the World Bank and the broader development community and to engage with young people around the world through a participatory and demand driven approach. The conference is one of Y2Y’s main products and is organized by a dedicated and enthusiastic network of Y2Y volunteers. In previous years, the conference has attracted audiences of more than 300 individuals from around the world.

What is the theme of this year’s conference?

A holistic approach to youth development is necessary to address the growing educational and employment needs of youth. This year’s conference aims to highlight the importance of this approach by promoting a dialogue among various stakeholders on how to equip youth with the adequate tools and competencies that will enable them to earn a dignified livelihood while positively impacting their communities.

This year’s conference – Empowering a Generation: Developing Skills and Capacities in Youth – emphasizes the urgency to focus on and invest in the needs of young people the world over. To this end, the conference will convene practitioners, experts, academia and organizations from around the world and facilitate the exchange of lessons learned, formulation of new ideas and models, and the creation of symbiotic relationships with the common goal of empowering the world’s youth. The conference sessions will feature organizations from Asia, Africa, Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East. Representatives from these organizations will present their key projects and engage in discussions on the challenges, constraints and successes experienced during the implementation and evaluation of their work.

Young people are tomorrow’s workers, leaders and entrepreneurs. Yet, all over the world, they struggle with a multitude of problems – drugs, crime, violence, unemployment, abuse, illiteracy and natural disasters to name a few. These young people are an entire generation - the future. And the time to build that future is now.

Conference registration is free, but mandatory, if you plan to attend. Please register before October 16, 2008 to ensure your participation.

Agenda

This year’s conference: Empowering a Generation: Developing Skills and Capacities in Youth will be presented under the following main themes:

Theme 1: Skills for Work and Life
Young people need to be equipped with the right skills and capacities to become active citizens, productive workers, and responsible parents. This theme will focus on organizations and programs that promote skills development in young people. The panels will feature organizations that work on developing entrepreneurial skills, transition to work skills, behavioral skills, and vocational skills using various tools and methods.

Theme 2: Leveraging Partnerships: The Role of Various Stakeholders
The involvement of local and international partnerships is key in facilitating a holistic approach to youth development. The objective of this panel is to highlight the importance of forming networks between communities, organizations, the private and public sector and educational institutions. For stakeholders in the youth development sphere, these linkages enable a wider reach, scale up, the possibility to add additional specialized services and facilitate the transition of young people from one stage of learning to the next. This panel will discuss these issues by bring a number of different perspectives to the table and discussing the advantages and challenges in involving several partners in their programs.

Theme 3: Challenges in Project Design and Evaluation
Practitioners face several challenges in designing and evaluating interventions that target young people. Young people face problems that are different from any other group, they respond differently to incentives, and are more prone to peer pressure and impulsive behavior. These reasons combined with the fact that interventions for young people often span several sectors, make program design and monitoring very difficult. Speakers will talk about how they have managed to isolate the effects of their development programs on particular outcomes and the lessons they have learned during their evaluations. Panelists will focus on specific outputs and outcomes they have achieved in the short and long-term and discuss how evaluation has led to more robust program design.

Brainstorming Session
Participants will be organized in groups and will resolve various case studies that will reflect the challenges of the several stages of a youth development project: design, implementation, and M&E. The case studies will draw on the topics discussed during the conference throughout the day. This session will be dynamic and will encourage attendants to put to work the tools that they have acquired at the conference.
